Raul Sanchez....Raul Sanchez i Jorge.....RauRau! What can be said? Well, a lot...but I'm pressed for time right now.

You may know him from Midnight Woolf or River Of Snakes, or maybe Magic Dirt? How about The Ape? Hell, some of you might even know him from Muffcake (you've been around, baby!). Either way, whatever has lead you to be reading this, you know enough about Raul already.

'Masks' is Raul's first solo album and I guess the best way to describe this is 'Cowboy Drone'...but it is way more than that. There are moments of lightness and twinkle and then giant wallops of screeching feedback. For Raul this is no doubt comfortable territory but for us its an exploration of the cinematic soundscapes that float around inside Raul's brain on a daily basis. These tracks were recorded over a period of about 7 years including tracks recorded in 2014, they have been slowly gathering up until Raul decided to put them together on this album for Wild Animal Records. It is all instrumental, all Raul, mainly guitars, some drums, glockenspiel, piano, flute and whatever was lying around the house that would make a sound; yep even a wok filled with water! All of it was recorded at home in an organic mash up add this, take that out drip drip drip way...

I hope he is glad to finally get them out of his brains....i can happily say Wild Animals Records is hugely proud to be getting them out for your brains (via your ears....or something!?).

I Was Cruel is my absolute favourite Magic Dirt track. I prefer the 9-minute 10" version with Daniel which hasn't been reissued since the 90s (hopefully soon!) but the album version with Dave T is still an absolute beast. Adam's drumming throughout this album is astounding. peterbarkercurated
